ZEISS S7 is a suspension system, not a standalone microscope. It forms part of a complete configuration together with the optical head, illumination, control system and additional equipment. The optical capabilities and intended use of the device therefore depend on the entire setup, and above all on the head fitted — not on the S7 designation alone.

Which microscopes use the ZEISS S7 system?
The ZEISS S7 system is used in the following configurations:

Design and variants of the ZEISS S7 system
The ZEISS S7 system has a mobile version and ceiling-mounted versions with a rigid or lifting column. The main difference lies in how the complete microscope is suspended and mounted, while the other structural components differ only slightly depending on the configuration. The optics, controls and equipment are determined by the head fitted and the version of the complete system.
ZEISS S7 mobile suspension system
A mobile base, vertical column, horizontal arm and swing arm form the structure of the mobile S7 system. The arms allow the head to be positioned, while four swivel castors allow the complete device to be moved. Once the system is in position, the castor locks stabilise the base. The base measures 640 × 640 mm and the stand is 1730 mm high.
ZEISS S7 ceiling-mounted suspension system with a rigid column
The ceiling-mounted version with a rigid column consists of a horizontal arm, swing arm, vertical column and a flange securing the system to a prepared ceiling structure. In this configuration, the complete microscope is suspended from the ceiling structure without a mobile base. The rigid column does not allow the height of the entire suspension system to be adjusted. Selection and installation of the system depend on the technical conditions of the room.
ZEISS S7 ceiling-mounted suspension system with a lifting column
The ceiling-mounted version with a lifting column consists of a horizontal arm, swing arm, ceiling flange and an electric column that adjusts the height of the entire assembly. The column has a travel range of 350 mm. This allows the height of the complete microscope to be adapted to the installation conditions of the room.
In the ZEISS OPMI PROergo configuration, the S7 system also has two wall-mounted versions — with a short or long swing arm — as well as a version for the Centro system.

Positioning and workspace arrangement with the S7 system
The position of the operating table, access for the operator and space for other equipment matter when positioning the S7 system. The mobile version can be moved to the chosen location and then stabilised with the castor locks. The ceiling-mounted version remains attached to its mounting point, so its position needs to suit the room layout.
The arm is balanced to match the weight of the head and equipment fitted. Correct adjustment affects the resistance during repositioning and the behaviour of the arm throughout its range of motion. After changing the head or accessories, the system’s balance needs to be checked again.
