ZEISS S100 — suspension system
ZEISS S100 is a suspension system from ZEISS, used in complete configurations with OPMI pico and the ophthalmic OPMI pico i. S100 has mobile, wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted variants; with OPMI pico, it also forms part of the Centro system or mounts on support units. The supporting structure enables positioning of the head, balancing of the arm and repositioning of the complete device. The optical features, type of illumination and clinical use depend on the microscope model that forms the complete configuration. Is ZEISS S100 a microscope model?
ZEISS S100 is neither a standalone microscope model nor an optical head. It is a suspension system that, together with a ZEISS OPMI head, illumination, controls and equipment, forms a complete surgical microscope. S100 provides the supporting structure, enables positioning of the head and provides the power supply and operating functions intended for the specific configuration.
S100 forms complete systems with two microscope models: OPMI pico and the ophthalmic OPMI pico i. These configurations differ in their intended use, illumination and equipment, so we describe them separately.
Which complete configurations use the ZEISS S100 system?
The ZEISS S100 system has two main configurations:
- S100 / ZEISS OPMI pico — mobile, wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, Centro or support unit configuration;
- S100 / ZEISS OPMI pico i — mobile, wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted configuration.
Complete S100 / OPMI pico systems are intended for dentistry, otolaryngology (ENT), gynecology, general surgery, cranial surgery, spine surgery, reconstructive surgery, plastic surgery and maxillofacial surgery, among other applications. We describe their use in dentistry in more detail on the dental microscopes page. The OPMI pico family is not intended for ophthalmology.
S100 / OPMI pico i, by contrast, is a complete configuration intended for observation and ophthalmic procedures involving the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. The microscope head model determines the difference in clinical use between these two families that use the S100 system.
Design and variants of the ZEISS S100 system
The installation method determines the structure of the S100 system. The mobile version uses a mobile base and a vertical column, while the wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted versions attach to a fixed mounting point. OPMI pico configurations also include the Centro system and support units. In each of these arrangements, the horizontal arm and swing arm support and reposition the complete microscope.
Mobile S100 system
A mobile base with four castors, a vertical column, a horizontal arm and a swing arm form the self-supporting structure of the mobile S100. This design allows the complete system to be moved between workstations; once it is in position, the castor locks stabilize the base. Movement of the arms allows the head to be set at the required height and repositioned over the working area.
Wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted S100
In the wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted versions, a fixed mount replaces the mobile base and vertical column. The wall-mounted system attaches to a bracket on the wall, while the ceiling-mounted system attaches to a mount above the workstation. Both arrangements leave the floor area clear but require the installation site to be prepared in advance. They also differ in their rotation range at the mounting point.
S100 in the Centro system and on support units
In OPMI pico configurations, the S100 system also forms part of a Centro arrangement or mounts on support units. The horizontal arm and swing arm remain the main structural components, while the installation method depends on the external supporting structure.
Positioning, balancing and illumination control
The user balances the swing arm to suit the weight of the fitted head and equipment. Once correctly balanced, the microscope can be raised and lowered without uncontrolled movement, and the resistance in the individual axes can be adjusted to suit the way it is used. Moving the complete mobile system requires the castor locks to be released; once the device is in position, the locks stabilize the base again.
The arm position also controls the illumination of the complete microscope. Raising the arm to its upper rest position switches off the light. In the S100 / OPMI pico i configuration, this function is activated within a zone approximately 30 mm wide at the top of the arm’s range of movement.

The mobile version forms a self-supporting system that can be moved between workstations. The wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted versions leave the floor area clear but require a fixed mounting point to be prepared to suit the installation site.
What determines the price of a used microscope with the ZEISS S100 system?
On the used equipment market, the price of a microscope with the ZEISS S100 system depends on the device model and version, the system’s mounting variant, its technical condition, completeness and the equipment fitted to the individual unit.
