Leica M822

The Leica M822 is an ophthalmic surgical microscope from Leica Microsystems intended for anterior and posterior segment surgery. The model uses a motorized 6:1 APO-Zoom with two separate beam paths and Leica OptiChrome objectives. The main LED illumination and coaxial OttoFlex system with a halogen lamp support observation of the surgical field and production of the red reflex. The suspension system, assistant view, and equipment for posterior segment observation and image recording depend on the specific configuration. Below, we present the units of this model currently available.

Leica M822 – model overview

The Leica M822 is an ophthalmic surgical microscope intended for procedures on the anterior and posterior segments. It belongs to the Leica microscope portfolio and combines a motorized 6:1 APO-Zoom with two separate beam paths and Leica OptiChrome objectives. The main LED illumination lights the surgical field, while the coaxial OttoFlex system with a halogen light source helps produce the red reflex.

Motorized magnification adjustment, focusing and the XY module allow the image and optical axis position to be adjusted without moving the entire suspension system. The tilt mechanism allows the optics carrier to be aligned with the viewing direction, while the choice of objective affects the working distance and the space above the surgical field.

Leica M822 configurations differ in their suspension system, tube, assistant view, controls, and equipment for posterior segment observation and image recording. The description and photographs of each unit show its actual configuration.

Leica M822 applications in ophthalmology

The Leica M822 is used in anterior and posterior segment surgery, including retinal, corneal and cataract procedures. The choice of observation system, illumination and controls allows the configuration to be adapted to the procedures performed. A broader overview of equipment for this specialty is available on the ophthalmic microscopes page.

LED illumination, OttoFlex and the red reflex

The Leica M822 uses two direct illumination systems housed in the optics carrier. The main LED source provides even illumination of the surgical field, while the coaxial OttoFlex system with a halogen lamp produces the red reflex. Both systems can be adjusted to suit the viewing conditions.

OttoFlex reduces stray light passing through the sclera and increases red reflex contrast. Retina Protection Function reduces the intensity of the main illumination and OttoFlex, allowing work at a lower light level.

Posterior segment surgery

In a configuration for posterior segment procedures, the Leica M822 works with wide-angle observation systems and image inverters. VR mode allows a separate set of settings to be saved for the microscope and control functions. The available functions depend on the observation system, inverter and controls used.

Key technical specifications of the Leica M822

OptiChrome and optical parameters

The Leica M822 optical system uses a motorized 6:1 APO-Zoom with two separate beam paths and Leica OptiChrome objectives. The field of view diameter ranges from 7 to 80 mm, while the total magnification range depends on the tube, eyepieces and objective used.

The Leica M822 works with objectives with f = 200 mm (WD 175 mm), f = 225 mm (WD 200 mm) or f = 250 mm (WD 225 mm). The choice of objective affects the optics carrier position and the space available above the surgical field. Motorized focusing with a range of 54 mm allows focus adjustment without repositioning the suspension system.

The motorized XY module provides a travel range of 50 × 50 mm and allows the optical axis to be moved relative to the surgical field. The tilt mechanism operates from +15° to −50°, allowing the optics carrier angle to be adapted to the viewing direction.

Integrated illumination

The main LED illumination and coaxial OttoFlex system are integrated into the optics carrier and deliver light without a fiber-optic cable. OttoFlex uses a 12 V / 50 W halogen bulb and a quick-change lamp mount with two bulbs.

Retina Protection Function reduces the main illumination intensity to 10% and OttoFlex to 20%. When the function is switched off, both systems return to their previous settings.

Controls and function automation

The control unit with a touchscreen allows settings to be saved for up to 30 users. Microscope functions can be assigned to a programmable foot control or hand control according to the system configuration.

StepCycle allows a sequence of up to 10 steps to be programmed. Individual steps can change magnification, focusing and illumination level, among other settings, and the operator switches between them using the control.

Auto Reset returns magnification, focusing and the XY module position to their baseline settings, loads the selected user profile and switches off the illumination when the microscope arm is raised. The tilt mechanism remains in its set position.

Leica M822 configurations and suspension systems

The Leica M822 is available in configurations with the Leica F20 and Leica F40 mobile suspension systems and the CT40 ceiling suspension system. The suspension system supports and positions the optics carrier but does not change the optical properties of the M822 itself. The choice of system affects how the microscope is set up and its positioning range.

The Leica M822 H is an earlier-generation variant configured with the F20, F40, C40 and CT40 systems. Its main illumination is halogen, whereas the M822 uses a main LED source. The M822 C40 is an earlier-generation configuration based on the C40 system.

Observation, image recording and VR mode options

In configurations intended for posterior segment surgery, the Leica M822 works with the Leica RUV800 system and the OCULUS SDI 4/BIOM 5 combination. The choice of observation system and inverter affects how the image is displayed and which functions are available through the control.

Image recording can be expanded with a Leica HD C100 camera and video adapters that are manually controlled, remotely controlled or equipped with zoom. A suitably configured M822 also works with the Verion image-guided system and the NGENUITY 3D visualization system.

Equipment for anterior segment procedures may include the Leica ToricEyePiece, a slit lamp, laser protection filters and the Leica Keratoscope. The Keratoscope uses a ring of 50 red LEDs and allows qualitative assessment of deformation in the pattern reflected on the cornea.

VR mode uses a separate set of microscope settings and separate foot control or hand control assignments. Depending on the configuration, the control operates the XY module, illumination and image inverter, among other functions.

Leica M822 compared with the M820 and M844

The Leica M820 is the predecessor of the M822. Both models use two beam paths and Leica OptiChrome optics, but differ in their illumination design. The M820 uses main halogen illumination and an OttoFlex II module, while the M822 combines main LED illumination with a coaxial OttoFlex system using a halogen lamp.

The Leica M844 is a separate ophthalmic microscope with the QuadZoom system and four separate beam paths. The M844 has main halogen illumination, and an independent OttoFlex II module supports the red reflex. The M822 uses two beam paths, main LED illumination and coaxial OttoFlex with a halogen lamp.

What determines the price of a used Leica M822 microscope?

On the used equipment market, the price of a used Leica M822 microscope depends on the technical condition, completeness and configuration of the individual unit, including its suspension system, optics, assistant view, controls, and equipment for posterior segment observation and image recording. At Medical Elektro, the level of preparation is neither an offer option nor a factor differentiating prices, because every unit offered undergoes the same standard of refurbishment. Each complete configuration is priced individually.

Refurbished Leica M822 microscopes at Medical Elektro

The term “used” refers to a microscope with a history of use. A refurbished surgical microscope is a used device that undergoes a multi-stage process of preparation for sale.

Refurbishment at Medical Elektro follows one standard that applies to the complete configuration of each unit. For the Leica M822, this covers the complete microscope with its appropriate suspension system and actual optical, observation, illumination, control and image recording equipment. Each refurbished unit has its own photographs and a description matching its configuration, and is covered by a 12-month warranty. The detailed scope is described on the surgical microscope refurbishment process page.
