The Leica M620 is an ophthalmic surgical microscope designed for retinal, corneal and cataract surgery. Halogen illumination and the red reflex

The Leica M620 uses homogeneous, coaxial illumination with a field diameter of 60 mm. Direct halogen light illuminates the surgical field, while coaxial beam delivery helps produce the red reflex.

The illumination brightness is adjustable. A shutter that can be operated under sterile conditions allows the 6° component of the light to be blocked and the red reflex to be adapted to the viewing conditions.

The quick-change lamp mount holds two 12 V / 50 W halogen lamps. It allows the light source to be switched to the second lamp when needed. The system also includes filters that block IR and UV radiation.

Configurations for posterior segment observation

In configurations intended for posterior segment surgery, the Leica M620 works with BIOM or EIBOS wide-angle observation systems and image inverters. The Leica M620 uses Leica OptiChrome optics. The optical system supports colour reproduction, contrast and the recognition of detail in the observed image. The motorized 6:1 zoom provides continuously variable magnification at an adjustable speed.

The Leica M620 works with three objective configurations: f = 175 mm, f = 200 mm (WD 175 mm), and f = 225 mm (WD 200 mm). The choice of objective determines the working distance, total magnification and field of view for the eyepiece used.

Motorized focusing has a travel range of 50 mm and an adjustable speed. In a configuration with the XY module, the optical axis can be moved over a range of 50 × 50 mm, and the reset functions return the module to its starting position. Manual head tilt adjustment over a range of ±5° allows precise correction of the viewing direction.

Controls and Auto Reset

The control unit displays brightness, magnification and the set speeds for zoom, focusing and the XY module. The control panel allows these functions to be adjusted, the XY direction to be reversed, the foot control to be configured, and one of four user profiles to be selected.

Each profile stores individual settings for the microscope functions. When the arm is raised, Auto Reset returns selected drives to their starting positions and prepares the system to work with the saved user settings. The range of functions reset automatically depends on the equipment in the configuration.

The Leica M620 and Leica M820 use Leica OptiChrome optics and a motorized 6:1 zoom. The M620 has coaxial halogen illumination, a focusing range of 50 mm and manual tilt adjustment of ±5°. The M820 uses halogen main illumination with an independent OttoFlex II module, 54 mm focusing and motorized tilt from +15° to −50°.

The Leica M822 combines LED main illumination with a coaxial OttoFlex system that uses halogen light. The model has 54 mm focusing and a motorized tilt mechanism from +15° to −50°. The M620 uses direct halogen light, 50 mm focusing and manual tilt correction of ±5°.

The Leica M844 uses the QuadZoom system with four separate light paths and an independent OttoFlex II module. The M620 assistant view is configured using a beam splitter and a suitable observation path, so its scope depends on the equipment of the individual unit.

Assistant view and ergonomics

The Leica M620 can be equipped with an additional observation path for the assistant. Depending on the tube used, the view is stereoscopic or monocular, and the observation path can be positioned to suit the second observer’s location.

Configurations with a 50/50 or 70/30 beam splitter divide the light between the main path and additional optical equipment. A rotating beam splitter allows the additional observation path to be repositioned and the assistant view to be adjusted to the team’s positions.
